ABSTRACT

THE COMPARISON OF ANDREW M. NICCOL’ THE TRUMAN SHOW AND ZACH HELM’ STRANGER THAN FICTION ON THE MAIN CHARACTERS’ EXISTENCE

Literary works, as we all know is the artistic work of human experiences in textual form; we are familiar with poem, prose, song lyric, and form of other literary work. And those kinds of textual art are brought out onto the various forms of art development such as drama, song with rhyme and melody, pantomime, big screen and others. The formation of textual art into big screen, which are familiar to be called movie or film, is the most interesting literary form to converse. A movie, the common term of dramatic composition has several conventional elements that distinguish it from prose or novel, those elements are: division into acts and scenes, cameras, characterizations, setting, theme, and plot.
This thesis discusses the comparison of the main character’ existence in two movies entitled The Truman Show and Stranger than Fiction.
The first movie entitled The Truman Show written by Andrew M. Niccol in 1998 tells about man named Truman Burbank who lives in big artificial studio called Seahaven and made by Cristof, the producer. The movie is framed around the television show entitled "The Truman Show." Its main character, Truman Burbank, has lived his entire life since his birth in front of cameras for the show, though he himself is unaware of this fact. Truman's life is filmed through thousands of hidden cameras, 24 hours a day and broadcast live around the world. To prevent Truman from discovering his false reality, Christof controls every aspect of Truman's life, even the weather. Truman seeks to get away from Seahaven, Truman then discovers the way out from seahaven leading him to a door marked "exit".
And the second movie entitled Stranger than Fiction made in 2006 by Zach Helm tells about Harold Crick, an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. One day, he begins hearing the voice of a woman that is omnisciently narrating the events in his life, and says; "little did he know that this small, seemingly innocuous act would result in his imminent death". Worried over this prediction, Harold turns to a psychiatrist who attributes the voice to schizophrenia. When he asks what she would advise if it were not schizophrenia, the psychiatrist suggests Harold turn to a literary expert. Jules Hilbert, a university professor. Jules says that maybe Harold is the main character of a story, and then he suggests Harold to find the writer and ask her to prevent his death. And the story goes to the journey of Harold to find his life’ writer and to avoid his death.
The problem to discuss in this thesis is the comparison of the main character’ existence in their life which have been controlled by the story makers, in those cases the story makers are the producer and the writer. And the problem solving of the main characters to face their life and to realize that their life is controlled by the story makers. This thesis uses inductive method. It begins from the specific discussion to the general conclusion. The analysis is begun by collecting the data from the movie script. Then find the characterization of each main character of each movie and the next step is relating the both of the main character’ existence and comparing both of it. The latter one is finding the general conclusion of the discussion.
The approaches used are Psychological approach, Maslow theory about Hierarchy of needs, and Marxism theory. Connecting with Psychological approach is used to explain the fictitious character in literary work. Maslow theory: Hierarchy of needs is the theory of human existence divided into five levels that fulfill the human needs as a proof of their existence. The latter one is Marxism theory which frames the discussion in material base as the motive of ideological base.
In the end of this comparative study of two main characters’ existence in The Truman Show and Stranger than Fiction, we can see the effort of Truman Burbank and Harold Crick to breakthrough the controlling of human who playing GOD to their life and finally find their truly existence as human being.

THE ADAPTATION, INFLUENCE AND PLAGIARISM IN LITERARY ART

Based on Harry Levin states about literary work that “The relation between literary works and social fact is reciprocal, Literary is not only the effect of social cause, it is also the cause of social it self.” In accordance to the statement above, we can see that there is a close relation between literary work and social fact, that fact lead to the notion that nowadays almost there is originality of literary work, Sapardi Djoko Damono states in his book entitled Pegangan Penelitian Sastra Bandingan that “Sastrawan mempunyai kecenderungan untuk meminjam, langsung atau tak langsung”, Sapardi also writes that the great artist like Shakespeare according to the experts is not original but it is influenced by the history, chronicle text and even verbal tradition, as it is quoted by Sapardi from Clements (1978: 129) that “Puisi epic berkembang sedikit demi sedikit dari tingkat folklore lisan kearah puisi tertulis”. It can be concluded that the main source of literary works is verbal tradition. Let we discuss about this further by knowing more about it causes that is adaptation, imitation and influence. Another kind of imitation that leads to the creative treason is called plagiarism.
Adaptation is the process of imitation based on literal translation from works written in different tongue. As Sapardi cites in his book that the adaption is used to reveal and solve the social problem accordance to the zeitgeist. The story of Marah Rusli entitled Salah Asuhan is considered as the adaption of Malin Kundang, but it is adapted by the zeitgeist of the story made. The development of modern literature shows that the interrelationship among literary works is common thing.
Influence is the most prominent reason to develop comparative literature. In this case, influence must be understood widely not only imitation processes which create new literary work based on the previous literature. The concept of influence is the relation which force the incidence to causality goes to intermediate correlation. In the process of influence there is emitter and receiver. Transmitter play big role to the achievement process of emitter to receiver. Transmitter is a medium to send message from emitter to receiver; those are translator, reviewer, critics, scholar, travelers, or vehicles like book and journals. In the factors of influences there is giving (active) and receiving (passive), and there is leader and follower and next is called as imitation, as it is written in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory by Ulrich Weinstein that “Influence define as unconscious imitation and imitation as directed influences”. Imitation is the process to imitate something based on our way, like the relation between the teacher and the student. On the contrary, influence is the process of revealing something in single, concrete manner, and it must be sought in many different manifestations (Shaw.CLS.Adv.issue, p.144). The conclusion is “The Influence cannot be quantitatively measured”, moreover adaptation, imitation and influence play role to find the originality of literary works.
The latter and unacceptable is plagiarism. Plagiarism is the kind of imitation considered as the “creative treason” because it is the imitation on the sly or quotation without reference to the sources. There is treason to the creative process to the author who create the literary works imitated, and the creative process or the creative imitation of the plagiarist is doubtful.

LITERARY RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY

1.Comment on this statement: The better our knowledge of literary genetics, the more surely can we distinguish between the individual, the original, the innovative on the one hand, and the commonplace and conventional on the other.

To the best of my understanding, literary genetics is the sources study of literary works (scholarly) aimed to establish the nature of ingredient that unite into a complete work of literary art. This source study refers to find the originality of literary art (literary history) by identifying the literary genetics of the literary works to find the sources and the descent of literary art. The sources may come from numerous and varied as the writer’ experience of life individually, and the direct source or borrowing source which is obtained from the relationship between literary works and the innovation of the authors obtained innovatively, while the indefinite source known as the parallel and analogue that refers to the internal and external factors supporting the creative process of literary works, it is related with the commonplace and conventional belongs to the literary era. All of those directions guide us to finding the origin of literary work which helps us to identify the literary works based on the authors, the works itself or the belonging of the era.

2.Discuss the following statement: Two fundamental truths shape and qualify the role of storage-and-retrieval systems-familiarly called computers-in literary research: (1). The material to be stored and classified must be of a homogeneous nature, adaptable to mechanical handling (in other words, not mass of discrete data), (2) The computer can handle data only in ways for which it is specifically and precisely programmed, and no human labor. The cost of a programmer’ expertise and of time on the computer substantial, it, too, may be an important limitation on the size a particular project may assume.

As the state of Dr. Johnson in the book entitled The Art of Literary Research that “Knowledge is two kinds. We know a subject ourselves or we know where we can find information upon it. When we enquire into any subject, the first thing we have to do is know what books have treated of it.” The statement above, surely refers to the second kind of knowledge is about the art of finding materials.
The most prominent thing is finding the relevant materials by collecting not just one but several of suggestion materials. In relation with the statement above, there two fundamental truth of qualifying the materials, there are:
a.The data must be stored and classified in the same sort to avoid the complicated handling.
b.The data must be programmed specifically and precisely, and it also must be programmed by human being (not the system, no matter how sophisticated it is).
It can be concluded that the art of finding material is the most prominent thing in literary research. And the art of the finding material is started by finding the relevant materials and classify them in the same sort the program it specifically and precisely by our instinct as human being, because literary works is reflection of our life so it is possible to discuss it mechanically.

The key words: Finding Materials, Relevant materials, Homogeneous Classification, specifically and precisely programming, human being’ sense
